For me, the wildest thing I heard was that Africa is a jungle, where people and wild animals share the same space and are hilarious to think about it. I have listed some of the top misconceptions about Africa;
1. Africa is not a Country
I, too, often listen to people introduce me to others, saying that he is from Africa as suppose Africa as a country. Listen, Africa is not a country; Africa is a CONTINENT with 54 countries.
I never said that he/she is from Europe or Asia. When you are referring to people, it is always better addressing the country name where the person is from because Africa is so big that you can combine the US, United Kingdom, China, and Canada altogether and still won’t make the size of Africa.
So don’t say he/she is from Africa because Africa is a vast continent with many countries. And I don’t believe you say he/she is from Europe or Asia because those are continent with many countries.
last, not least, take a look at the African map and see how many countries you will find to stop making a mistake to call Africa as a “COUNTRY.” Oh, by the way, among 54 nations in Africa, some of them are Kingdoms. We got kings too, and I believe I’m one of them.
2. African is not a language.
Do you speak African? Lord, give me a break.
There is no such language called African; I never heard anyone speaking language called African, European, or Asian.
Africa has 54 countries, and there are an estimated 2,000 languages spoken on the continent of Africa. Some are European languages like English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and German.
Also, you can find some African languages like Swahili, Amharic, Yoruba, Oromo, Igbo, Zulu, Lingala, Shona, and Arabic.
So don’t dare to ask an African if he/she speaks African.
3. Africa is the poorest Land.
Africa is the wealthiest continent in the World. CONTINENT, not COUNTRY. There is no other continent with more concentrated natural resources than the Africa Continent.
The majority of gold mined in the world comes to Africa in places like South Africa, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Tanzania.
According to the International Monetary Fund in 2015, the GDP of Portugal and Ireland didn’t match the GDP of Nigeria. The Angola GDP higher than the Slovak Republic and Ukraine, Or the GDP of South Africa higher than the GDP of Denmark.
These facts show that Africa has wealthy nations as well as other nations in the Americas and Europe. So don’t assume that Africa is the poorest continent on the planet based on the mainstream media outlet displays.
4. There are only Black people in Africa.
There are millions of white people in Africa born there through many generations, most of them through European ancestry.
That’s the case in countries like Angola, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Morocco, and many others.
So if you come across a white person saying that he or she is from Angola or Zimbabwe, don’t be shocked because Africa is the motherland of humanity.
5. Africa is a big village.
People often assume Africa is a big village with not infrastructures. Some people believe that Africa is a place with no transportation infrastructure, buildings, airports, roads, electricity, and plumbing water. Instead, they think Africa is about shantytowns that people live in the huts. Seriously?
You would be surprised that many countries in Africa have a modern infrastructure just like in other countries in Europe, Asia or America. Africa is also a place where you can find skyscrapers, beautiful valley, and the mountain where no man never set barefoot.
6. Africa is a war zone
Please don’t come and tell me you are scared to travel to Africa because you might get shot dead. That’s fashion news tends to make viewers believe that most countries in Africa are in a war zone.
The number of countries with internal armed conflict is fewer less than in the middle east. Also important to know that some western countries fuel most of this conflict because it is profitable for some western countries.
So don’t think that Africa is a war zone, because there are a lot more people getting shot in developed countries than most places in Africa.
7. I don’t know any African billionaire
Is that important for you? Maybe not, but you might not believe that for the last ten years, the number of riches people in Africa has increased significantly.
The top richest person in Africa has a net worth of $10.3 Billion; Aliko Dangote from Nigeria. He’s just one of the many other people of wealth in Africa countries.
So this continent also does have wealthy people even though Africa has not achieved the standard of technological advancement and other sectors of life, but that’s not only what defines the Africa continent.
Hopefully, this has cleared some of the most frequent misconceptions about Africa, and I urged you to take trip one to Africa not just for safari but to see with your eyes what it is like to be the motherland.
