The Ultimate Guide to Tupper Lake Triad

What Makes a Good Hiking Journey?

Hiking is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the outdoors. If you’ve thought about hiking but haven’t yet tried it, now is the perfect time to get out there!

The Tupper Lake Triad

The Tupper Lake Triad consists of three small mountain hikes surrounding the town of Tupper Lake, NY: Mt. Arab, Coney Mountain, and Goodman Mountain.

Four weeks ago, I joined a group of friends to hike all three mountains in one day. We drove to Tupper Lake early Sunday morning and arrived at the trailhead at half past 9 AM.

Mt. Arab

We started with Mt. Arab, the shortest of the three hikes, featuring a 2-mile round trip to the summit. It is also the steepest, with an elevation of 2,545 feet and an ascent of 764 feet. At the top, you’ll find one of the thirty fire towers in the Adirondacks, easily spotted from the parking lot and trailhead on Mt. Arab Road.

I found the hike relatively easy, making it an enjoyable experience even for first-time hikers. It’s considered family-friendly, and we encountered many families on the trail.

Coney Mountain

Next, we hiked Coney Mountain, which is 2.3 miles round trip with an elevation of 2,280 feet and an ascent of 548 feet. The parking lot is small, so most hikers parked on the shoulder of Route 30.

The trail features rocks that may require you to slow your pace, with some narrow sections. As you approach the summit, the trail widens, allowing for a refreshing breeze—my cue that we were near the top.

The final mountain we tackled was Goodman Mountain. The view from the top is spectacular, featuring interesting rock formations.

Goodman Mountain is the longest hike of the day at 3.2 miles round trip, with an elevation of 2,178 feet and an ascent of 581 feet. To get there, we headed toward Tupper Lake Village, turned onto Route 30 toward Long Lake, and found the trailhead post ahead.

The Goodman Mountain hike is rated easy to moderate. The first section has a paved surface, but the trail becomes steeper as you approach the summit.

Hiking the triad was a fun day! We met several fellow hikers doing the same trek. We started around 9:30 AM and finished the last trail at 5:50 PM. It was an exceptional experience that I highly recommend to friends and family. The views are incredible!
