If you read my articles, you probably have noticed that my articles tend to be more educative than controversial. Today I want to talk about something that bothers me.
As we all are witnessing the protest against systemic racism taking place all over the country in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, I have been hearing people on the television saying the term “people of color” refers to black people.
People of Color
For too long, I have been trying to understand the meaning of people of color. I google the term “people of color,” the result was “a person who is not white or of European parentage.” I asked some people to explain or to help me understand it, and they didn’t come up with a convincing answer.
I must confess that I have never understood why people of my skin color are referred to as people of color.
Now let me tell you why I’m not a person of color:
I don’t turn yellow when I’m freaked out,
I don’t turn green when I’m sick,
I don’t turn red when I’m exposed to the sun
I don’t turn purple if I get injured.
So, why you refer people of my skin color as people of color? This is why I don’t understand when I hear black people being referred to as people of color.
I don’t intend to offend anyone here. If you felt displeased with my arguments, I offer my apologies in advance. I have no intention or whatsoever to do so. I’m merely arguing here that the term people of color is nonsense and inappropriate if we look at its meaning.
Hispanic or Latino
I also often hear people saying that Hispanic/Latino is a race. There is no such race as Hispanic or Latino. You can be black Hispanic/Latino or White Hispanic/Latino. which means it is an ethnicity, not a race as some people like to think as if it is another race.
So, I hope you understand the point that I’m trying to address here. Often we say things just because everyone else is saying without knowing the actual meaning of the term.
