What makes a good hiking journey?
Hiking is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the outdoors. If you have thought about hiking, but have yet to try, it is time to go out there.
The Tupper Lake Triad is a series of three small mountain hikes surrounding the town of Tupper Lake, NY. The three mountains are Mt. Arab, Coney Mountain, and Goodman Mountain.
Four weeks ago, I joined a group of friends to hike three mountains in one day. We drove to Tupper lake early Sunday morning and we arrived on the trail half past 9 am.
Mountain Arab
We started with Mt. Arab because it is the shortest of the three with a 2 miles hike to the summit round trip. It is also the steepest Elevation: 2545 feet and Ascent: 764 feet. The top of Mt. Arab has one of the thirty fire towers of the Adirondacks. It is located to the west of Tupper Lake and is very easy to spot the parking lot and trailhead from Mt. Arab Road.
I found the hike relatively easy. If you have never hiked before you should be able to enjoy the experience. It’s considered family-friendly; an outing that both canines and young children can enjoy. We saw lots of families on the trail.
Level of difficulty: easy
Coney Mountain
The next mountain we hiked was Coney Mt. Coney Mountain is 2.3 miles round trip with an elevation of 2280 feet and an Ascent of 548 feet. The parking lot is small so most of the people hiking parked right on the shoulder of the highway, route 30.
Along the way, you will find rocks on the trail, which might require patrons to slow their pace. You will also see narrow sections but as you approach the summit, it will start to expand and permitting an occasional breeze.
That was always my indication that we were near the top of the mountain.
Level of difficulty: easy
Goodman Mountain
The last mountain on the trip was Goodman Mountain. The view at the top of the mountain is amazing with an interesting rock formation to admire.
Goodman Mountain is the longest of the hikes at 3.2 miles round trip with an elevation of 2178 feet and Ascent of 581 feet. To get there, we headed in the direction of Tupper Lake Village, turned on route 30 toward Long Lake to Lumberjack Spring on the left, and the trailhead post is ahead.
The Goodman mountain hike is easy to moderate. The first section of this mountain is a paved surface but then the trail swings gently and becomes steeper before getting to the top of the summit.
Hiking the triad was a fun day. We met a few people along the way that were doing the triad just like our group. We started around 9:30 am and we finished the last trail at 5:50 pm. It was an exceptional experience that I highly recommend to friends and family visits. The views are incredible.
